Towards the Inclusion of Inter-Ethnic Studies in Comparative Literature in China

In their article Towards the Inclusion of Inter-Ethnic Studies in Chinese Comparative Literature Xiaoqing Han and Aaron Lee Moore advocate for the inclusion of inter-ethnic studies in Chinese comparative literature. The traditional definition for many Chinese comparative literature scholars continues to confine the discipline to inter-national or cross-civilization studies rather than including inter-ethnic studies, and Chinese ethnic minority writing continues to be underrepresented in the national literary canon. This article is in no way opposed to the continued growth and development of a Chinese national literature. But rather, it seems crucial that inter-ethnic studies should be included in the discipline of Chinese comparative literature, considering the fact that there are 55 officially recognized and registered Chinese minorities (ć°‘æ•°æ°‘æ—), constituting nearly 8.5% (113 million) of the total population of China, each with their own distinct and rich cultural heritage and literary tradition

History education and 'Asian' values for an 'Asian' democracy: the case of Singapore

Where some of the papers in this volume deal with nation building in the democratising former East European states in the wider ideological context of liberal democratic thought, this paper aims to present a view of values and democracy from an alternative, ‘Asian’ perspective. South East Asian nations, such as Singapore, have attempted to articulate and practise forms of ‘Asian’ democracy as a response to, and in rejection of, Western liberal democratic models. In these countries, there is not so much a programme of reform and liberalization, as an attempt to evolve a form of democracy suited to an Asian society. To this end, efforts have been made by political leaders to articulate what ‘Asian’ values are, and some countries have also promoted sets of values that are considered to be congruent with their form of ‘Asian’ democracy. Singapore is an example of how a government has set about developing a form of ‘Asian’ democracy. By examining the history texts used in Singapore schools, and comparing the different contexts in which European and ‘Asian’ values are embedded and used, the paper shows that there is indeed a distinctive form of values and democracy that is taught. But, while this is referred to as ‘Asian’, there is in fact a lacuna in terms of the wider values framework and context, and children are in effect being socialised into accepting a rather passive conception of citizenship and a notion of democracy that are arguably distinctive to Singapore. What that Asia stands for is far too diverse, and perhaps there is also, on the part of Singapore and its political leaders, an inclination to make ‘Asian’ values in their own image, as it were

Casas i Lamium galeobdolon (L.) L.).We report new data on the chorology of 25 vascular plants from the Guilleries and Collsacabra mountains. These taxa may be grouped into five categories: 1.- novelties for the flora of Guilleries (Peucedanum officinale L., Senecio adonidifolius Loisel., etc.); 2.- novelties for the flora of Collsacabra (Carex liparocarpos Gaudin, Seseli tortuosum L., etc.); 3.- novelties for a broader area in the NE of Catalonia (Carex demissa Hornem., Potentilla recta L., etc.); 4.- confirmation of old or doubtful citations (Trifolium micranthum Viv., Carex alba Scop., etc.); 5.- taxa found in their southernmost localities in Catalonia (Narcissus moleroi Fern. Casas and Lamium galeobdolon (L.) L.)

Talking to the crowd: What do people react to in online discussions?

This paper addresses the question of how language use affects community reaction to comments in online discussion forums, and the relative importance of the message vs. the messenger. A new comment ranking task is proposed based on community annotated karma in Reddit discussions, which controls for topic and timing of comments. Experimental work with discussion threads from six subreddits shows that the importance of different types of language features varies with the community of interest

Kinetic Analysis of Lower Body Resistance Training Exercises

This study evaluated and compared the peak vertical ground reaction force (GRF) and rate of force development (RFD) for the eccentric and concentric phases of 4 lower body resistance training exercises, including the back squat, deadlift, step-up, and forward lunge. Sixteen women performed 2 repetitions of each of the 4 exercises at a 6 repetition maximum load. Kinetic data were acquired using a force platform. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to evaluate the differences in GRF between the exercises. Results revealed significant main effects for GRF both the eccentric (p ≀ 0.001) and concentric (p ≀ 0.001) phases. Significant main effects were also found for RFD for the eccentric (p ≀ 0.001) and concentric phases (p ≀ 0.001). Force and power requirements and osteogenic potential differ between these resistance training exercises
